PAXXON Technical Insight: Performance Upgrade of TBR Tires under the S2W2R3B Standard
With the upgrade of the EU UNECE R117 regulation and tire labeling legislation,S2W2R3B has become the latest certification standard for TBR (Truck and Bus Radial) tires in the European market.
This standard not only raises the market entry threshold but also places higher demands on fleet performance in terms of safety, energy efficiency, and long-term operational stability.
In essence, S2W2R3B is not a single metric, but a comprehensive evaluation of multiple tire performance dimensions:
• S2: Stage 2 Rolling Sound Emission
Certification requirements:
Standard tires and snow tires ≤ 73 dB
Severe snow tires ≤ 74 dB
Special-use tires ≤ 75 dB
For drive axle tires, the limit can be relaxed by 2 dB
• W2: Stage 2 Wet Grip Performance
Certification requirements:
Standard and snow tires ≥ 0.95
Severe snow and special-use tires ≥ 0.80
• R3: Stage 3 Rolling Resistance
Certification requirements:
Standard and snow tires ≤ 6.0 N/kN
Severe snow and special-use tires ≤ 6.5 N/kN
• B: Wet Grip Performance in Worn Condition
Certification requirements:
After being worn down to the legally defined minimum tread depth:
Standard tires ≥ 0.66
Severe snow and special-use tires ≥ 0.54
Currently, in the EU TBR market, the number of products that fully comply with the S2W2R3B labeling requirements remains limited.
PAXXON’s new long-haul drive tires — PDL77 and PDL78 — have successfully passed this certification. For fleets, this is not only about compliance, but also a practical solution to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).
